Japanese Performance and its Resonances

In Fall 2026, Elizabeth Oyler partnered with Josh Cannon, author of Fatal Second Helen (a combat veteran’s reading of the Iliad),  to start the Reading the Epic Past with Veterans Reading Group. Our biweekly meeting of US armed service veterans consists of a group of US armed service veterans who come together to reflect on the Iliad and Tale of the Heike through the lens of their own military experience. Together, we share stories and explore how ancient texts are always in conversation with the current moment. This group is hosted by the Veterans Breakfast Club.

In June 2026, Matthew Chudnow invited the Japan Foundation Traveling Exhibition “Yokai Parade: Supernatural Monsters from Japan,” to Central Connecticut State University.

At the Performing Intermedia in Japan conference (2023), Lim Beng Choo discussed the potential of Noh as Intermedia, a digital humanities project developed by three musicologists. In her presentation she analyzed the uses of digital tools in the study of noh, which provides alternative methodology in noh, especially the musical aspects of the genre.

In 2018, Lim Beng Choo launched Perform CT,  short for Perform Contemporary Tradition, a virtual space for research on traditional theatre performance in contemporary times.
